CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER – SHFB Location: Fayetteville, NC Department: Second Harvest Food Bank of SENC Closing Date: Open until filled Employment Type: Full-time/Non-exempt Starting Pay Range: $90,000 - $100,000 annually Amount of Travel – 25% Work Schedule – Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, with frequent weekends and evenings OVERVIEW OF GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES Provide leadership, vision, and expertise to the Second Harvest Food Bank (SHFB).
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is the second-in-command at the SHFB.
The COO is responsible for the daily operations and improvement of the foodbank systems that acquire and deliver food to those who are food insecure throughout the foodbank's service area, including Bladen, Cumberland, Duplin, Harnett, Hoke, Robeson, and Sampson counties in North Carolina.
Responsibilities encompass oversight of key operations and facilities management, with key staff reporting directly to the COO.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The COO is responsible for strategically managing, acquiring, storing, and distributing over 16 million pounds of food each year to feed the food insecure in seven counties.
Working closely with the Food Bank Director and leading the operations team, the COO is the driving force behind the critical role of all food and facilities-related aspects of Action Pathways' foodbank.
The COO will identify and manage the needs of the organization to successfully execute food distribution operations and the company's priorities.
Of key importance is the ability to be able to roll up one's sleeves, dive in, and produce results utilizing the existing infrastructure to meet current operations goals while making time to strategically grow the overall effectiveness and depth of our efforts.

Job Duties • In collaboration with the Director, ensure that business operations are efficient and effective.
• Collaborates with the Director, foodbank staff, and the CEO to establish and accomplish annual goals and objectives and assess key performance indicators to ensure the foodbank meets or exceeds its goals and timelines of the organization's strategic direction for food distribution • Oversee the organization's financial operations; oversee the budgetary process and ensure that sound financial controls are in place and that funds are spent wisely; work closely with the accounting team to maintain the organization's current and future financial and administrative well-being.
• Maintain, promote, and provide visibility for Food Bank by serving as a credible, articulate, and effective spokesperson, in person and writing; reinforce and build a positive understanding of and reputation for the work of the organization; serve as a spokesperson and advocate for the people served by the organization.
• Work closely with the CEO to ensure clear and effective articulation of the agency's mission and purpose.
• Leverage the resources of the Food Bank to beneficially impact relevant public policy, programs, and funding; continue the Food Bank's leadership role in influencing policy by being an articulate advocate for poverty, hunger, and nutrition.
• Build effective partnerships with organizations and individuals working in the Food Bank's areas of interest.
• Identify and deepen relationships with the community to nurture goodwill, recruit and engage new and ongoing donors/supporters, and develop and enhance partner organization relationships to reach the objectives of a comprehensive community engagement and fund development plan.
• Working with the CEO, ensure a sound funding base for the organization; broaden the funding base and mix so that development activities evolve as the funding environment evolves.
• Understand the actual and prospective funding communities for the Food Bank; create strategies to secure ongoing significant sources of private/unrestricted funds to support the organizations; with the CEO, identify innovative methods for tapping new funding sources and networks on behalf of the organization.
• Ensures proper management of resources and coordination • Working with the Director to maintain and monitor staffing levels as well as employees' • Knowledge-Skills-Abilities (KSAs), expectations, and motivation to fulfill foodbank requirements • In collaboration with the warehouse staff and foodbank staff, divide and assign work among operational staff to promote effective and efficient storage and delivery of food products • Coaches employees under direct supervision and provides appropriate feedback and performance evaluation • Maintains working knowledge of all facets of the warehouse and other foodbank facilities to ensure that prompt receipt, distribution, and documentation of products are of the highest priority and meet standards of health and safety • In collaboration with the warehouse staff, ensures effective inventory control (weighing, counting, receipting, resolving unaccounted-for products, etc.
), stock rotation, and sufficient food availability and supply in line with the foodbank standard operating procedures • Ensures that employees follow or comply with the Employee Personnel Policies and Procedures, as amended from time to time, as well as any applicable safety, operational, and accounting policies and procedures • Facilitates communications between executive leadership and departments to remove, where possible, communication barriers, ensures timely responsiveness, facilitates ongoing and prompt decision-making • In collaboration with the Director, accepts responsibility for the completion of short-term and long-term planning initiatives within budget guidelines • Offers advice and guidance to the foodbank staff on business matters, including operational policies and procedures and new initiatives while fostering a success-oriented and accountable environment.
• Working with the Director and Action Pathways' Leadership to oversee the planning and execution of disaster response operations and management of partner relationships during times of emergency • Participates in meetings and committees as requested by the Director and CEO • Complies with all Action Pathways and Feeding America policies and procedures, as well as state and federal regulations and guidelines specific to foodbank operations • Maintains a professional and courteous manner at all times • Perform other related duties as requested or assigned QUALIFICATIONS • Bachelor's degree in public/business administration, management, human services, or related fields.
(Master's degree preferred.
) • Minimum of five (5) years of management experience in a related field.
(Executive nonprofit experience preferred.
) • Experience with inventory management software and a high level of computer mastery (MS Office Suite, Pivot tables, etc.
) • Excellent public speaking ability and experience.
• Exceptional communication skills (verbal and written), including the ability to address issues in nonpartisan and non-polarizing ways.
• Human resources management experience and ability.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people from all backgrounds.
• Knowledge of poverty and hunger issues and support of the organization's mission.
• A hands-on worker willing to develop and execute a variety of activities ranging from the internal day-to-day to the highly creative, external, and visible.
• Emotional maturity with a sense of humor to maintain balance and perspective.
• Flexibility to travel to off-site meetings and to work hours outside of a normal day.
• Valid Driver's License, clean driving record, proof of insurance, and reliable transportation.
• Must possess analytical, solid interpersonal, and communication skills and can work with minimal supervision in a team environment.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines • Ability to work occasional off-hours duty to permit timely attention to mission-critical functions.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Background checks with state and Federal law enforcement agencies are required.
