WE HAVE JUST 3 RHODE ISLAND RED AND 9 BLACK AUSTRALORP PULLETS LEFT FOR SALE! Our 12 week old pullets are available for pick up at our farm or delivery for a reasonable fee.
These are heritage breed, dual-purpose birds that do well on pasture and in various environments.
Both are excellent layers of large brown eggs, able to produce 275-300 eggs per year with the proper feed and conditions.
A Black Australorp holds the record for having laid 364 in one year! They should begin laying at about 24 weeks of age.
They have been raised by us on our farm from day-old chicks, and have been on pasture in movable pens since 5 1/2 weeks old.
They are healthy and eating forage and insects along with locally-sourced, non-GMO feed.
They are enjoying being in their natural environment with plenty of fresh air and sunshine.
We use these breeds for our personal flock and are very pleased with them.
THIS IS A GOOD TIME OF YEAR TO PURCHASE PULLETS TO FINISH RAISING OUT TO BEGIN LAYING.
Chickens do not lay well over the winter without supplemental light due to the short day length.
Their production is also hindered due to low temperatures.
These will begin laying in March just as the temperatures are rising, the day length is increasing and the pastures are growing.
If you plan on having your birds unprotected from aerial predators you may want to consider adding some Black Australorps to your flock.
After suffering several hawk attacks we added some Blacks and have not lost any more chickens of either type to hawks.
From the air the Blacks tend to look like crows, which are a natural enemy of hawks and owls, so they may possibly provide some protection.
